So, I walked into work the other day, a small business pet store and overheard a customer say, “We should go to the shelter and pick out an animal.” I was quick to stop the customers and to inform them that our animals come from shelters. I then took out the animal’s adoption forms that we had received from the Long Beach animal shelter. I showed them the papers and explained the process on how to adopt the animals. Even though there are signs posted with the animal’s customers tend to overlook the information on the papers. I then explained that shelter animals that come to pet stores are the animals that are considered overflow from the shelter. Meaning they are unable to keep the animals within their shelter. We do our best to support the local shelter so abandoned or surrendered animals can find a loving family and home. Long Beach Animal shelter has their euthanasia statistics posted Here on their site, by working with the shelter pet stores can help the decrease in euthanasia for dogs and cats not just locally, but nationally. According to the American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) “Each year, approximately 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized (670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats).” The process to adopt an animal from a pet store is the same process as if you were purchasing directly from the shelter. All you do is fill out an adoption form and it gets faxed directly to the shelter. A common question when I tell customer this information is “are they fixed?”. All the animals directly from the shelter have been evaluated. This List provides more information on how and what the Long Beach Shelter does when an animal comes to their door. All the animals get treated with same love and care whether they within a shelter or in small pet store. So, next time you walk into a pet store don’t overlook the animals because you are looking for a shelter animal. Ask about the animal because that animal could have been the animal that was right for you and came from the shelter down the street.
